THE SCIENCE OF SEAWEED

The Science of Seaweed | The Handmade Soap Company US

We use seaweed in some of products. It’s a primary ingredient in our bestselling Grapefruit & Irish Moss Soap and it features in some of our exclusive lines for hotels and spas.

Like with everything at The Handmade Soap Company, it’s no accident that sea algae found its way into our lotions and potions. Donagh is an avid surfer and likes to take to the waves on the west coast of Ireland whenever he gets a free minute. The majority of Irish seaweed is harvested off the Atlantic coastline. Naturally, his interest piqued when he spotted one such harvest in Co. Clare. After learning about the benefits of seaweed, Donagh couldn’t wait to introduce it to our handmade skincare.

VITAMIN SEA

Seaweed grows in abundance and has an unusually high concentration of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and anti-oxidents. Hidden amongst its dense crops you’ll find a cocktail of magnesium, manganese, calcium, copper, iron, zinc and vitamins A, B, C, D and E. It soaks up the nutrients floating around the ocean and forms a jelly-like consistency. It’s been used as a staple in spas and even restaurants for years but why do we include it in our beauty products?

HYDRATION

Seaweed acts as a natural humectant (a substance used in skincare and haircare that literally holds moisture). This and the ever-popular moisturizing agent, vitamin E, ensure the seaweed keeps your skin naturally hydrated and plump.

ANTI-AGING

Seaweed is one of the fastest growing organisms on earth. It can grow up to two feet in one day during primary growth season. This means it has an inherent ability to regenerate skin by reinforcing cell membranes, while amino acids smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. It also protects skin against free radicals.

CELLULITE

Thanks to its gentle exfoliating properties, seaweed stimulates micro-circulation and aids the lymphatic flow throughout the body, thus reducing the appearance of cellulite.

ACNE

Our Grapefruit & Irish Moss (another name for Carrageenan seaweed) Soap is a good addition to your skincare routine if you’re suffering from acne. The naturally-occuring zinc and magnesium in seaweed clears skin of any infection. And vitamins B and C help to clear pigmentation that may have developed from sun exposure.

These are just some of the reasons we love having seaweed in our skincare routine. Do you use seaweed in your skincare? Or is it a staple in your diet? Get in touch and let us know at info@thehandmadesoapcompany.com
