What we're watching on Netflix

Gone are the days of flicking through station after TV station in search of something that might tickle your fancy. Now that we have endless TV shows and movies on demand, we can make the most of our down time. Sure, the selection can be a bit overwhelming and sometimes we don't always hit the mark, but when we do, boy do we want to shout about it. Here's what we've been watching.

The Defiant Ones

This HBO documentary miniseries was originally aired in the US and Canada before Netflix acquired it and let the rest of the world in on the action. The four-part series chronicles the friendship and professional partnership between Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Donagh has been waxing lyrical about the show which also documents the rise of rap music, the growth of the music industry and its struggle against internet-sharing sites, plus Apple's million-billion-dollar acquisition of Beats by Dre a few years ago.

Archer

Archer is one of those shows that gets missed or scrolled by on Netflix. Possibly because it's an animated show, but it is definitely not one for the kids. For fans of Arrested Development, the show stars the voice of Jessica Walter, aka Lucille Bluth as the matriarch. You'll also spot the voice of Kitty Sanchez. But Arrested Development ties aside, this is one of the best shows on Netflix. It's smart and witty (very witty), an oft overlooked combo for television shows in these days of reality TV. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

Wild Wild Country

If you're one of those people who finds guilty-pleasure in watching religious zealots and creepy cults then this is the dream. A multi-part documentary featuring (a surprising amount of) original footage plus a series of interviews with former cult-members in that very polished Netflix style, this is the true story of an Indian guru who set up the sinister commune of Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. The once free-love ethos soon dissolved into paranoia, obsession, indoctrination and multiple deaths. You'll be hooked.

And because it was waaay too hard to narrow it down to three, we also watched Chef's Table, Rick & Morty, The Trip, Orphan Black, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Black Mirror, The Sinner and RuPaul's Drag Race.
